Meta changes fact-checking strategy to new method

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, is ending its current fact-checking program.

The tech giant is adopting a new system, shifting to a user-driven approach similar to that used by X (formerly known as Twitter).

This change will only affect users in the United States.

Meta explained that the existing fact-checking program was often criticized as a tool for censorship.

Instead of relying on third-party fact-checkers, Meta said the new system will allow users to flag misleading posts themselves.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said recent events, like the U.S. elections, have pushed the company to prioritize free speech.

According to Meta, Canadian users will not see any changes to the new fact-checking program for now.
