Starting In January, NBers Will Add The Area Code For Local Calls

Ten-digit dialing is coming to the province.

Starting January 20th, 2023, New Brunswickers will begin dialing the area code plus the phone number for all local calls.

This is the result of a decision made by the CRTC and it will pave the way for adding a new area code, 428, which is coming in April.

It will begin being assigned once the existing inventory of 506 is depleted.

Once the ten-digit dialing is official, local calls with only seven digits will receive a recorded announcement.

The 506 area code must be added to all programmed numbers in communications devices and equipment including wireline and wireless phones, auto-dialers, computers, alarm systems and lifeline equipment. Residents should also consider including their ten-digit phone numbers on stationary, cheques, and advertising, and update their employee, client, supplier, and other databases before next year.
