N.S, N.B. reach deal with feds on Chignecto Isthmus protection

An agreement to protect the Chignecto Isthmus.

Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have reached a deal with the federal government to protect the connection from the effects of climate change.

The feds will pay $325 million through a disaster mitigation fund, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will each pay $162.5 million over the next 10 years.

The connection between the two provinces is vital for trade, with over $100 million worth of goods crossing the isthmus each day.

New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt calls it a necessary partnership with the federal government and Nova Scotia to protect the critical corridor, and provides security for people living in the area.

She says it’s only the first step for long-term climate solutions for the area.
