Air India flight crashes after takeoff

An Air India flight carrying over 240 passengers and crew has crashed after takeoff.

The airline confirmed this morning that the Boeing 787-8 came down in Ahmedabad, India. It was en route to London.

Posts on social media show flames and a large plume of smoke after the airplane went down. Other scenes show the blackened and burnt rubble left behind on the ground.

The airline states that there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals onboard.

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer stated on ‘X’ that the scenes are devastating, “I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time.”

Also on ‘X’, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi says this tragedy is stunning and saddening, “It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.”

No word yet on any fatalities.
