3 convicted, 4 awaiting sentencing in Tobique First Nation kidnapping case

Three people have been convicted and sentenced in connection with a violent kidnapping and assault on Tobique First Nation.

RCMP said the case dates back to April of last year, when seven people were arrested after a 54‑year‑old woman from Florenceville was kidnapped at gunpoint, held against her will and assaulted.

Police said the woman was treated in hospital for significant but non‑life‑threatening injuries and was later released.

Three of the accused were found guilty in court on Friday, according to police.

Mounties say that one of the people convicted is facing six years behind bars, another received a four-year sentence, and the third person was given a three-year sentence.

They were convicted of the following offences:

  • Kidnapping with a firearm
  • Extortion with a firearm
  • Forcible confinement
  • Forcible confinement while choking to overcome
  • Forcible confinement while using a stupefying or overpowering drug
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm

The other four accused remain before the courts. RCMP said three are scheduled to return for sentencing on November 5, while another is set to appear on December 12.
