Municipal Election Deadline Quickly Approaching

Less than 48 hours remain until the nomination deadline for municipal elections on May 10th.

Chief Electoral Officer for Elections New Brunswick Kim Poffenroth says as of Tuesday this week, there were four municipalities with no candidates, “It’s not unusual for people to wait until the last minute. But I do encourage people not to wait until that 2pm deadline on April 9th, because if you wait and something needs to be corrected, you don’t actually have the opportunity to rectify.”

As of Tuesday, names had been submitted in 100 of the province’s 104 municipalities for various council positions.

Twelve positions for Mayor remain vacant, with no candidates having offered in those municipalities, and 11 councillor positions remain vacant across the province.

Poffenroth says, “That is concerning because that would leave those municipalities without a council. In those cases, the Minister would be responsible for appointing a supervisor to run those municipalities.”

New Brunswickers will also be electing to District Education Councils and Regional Health Authority Boards.

“Both Anglophone and Francophone is divided into sub-districts. Each sub-district elects a council member to the District Education Council, so there’s 41 positions in the Anglophone School Districts and 27 in the three Francophones,” Poffenroth says.

Forty of District Education Council positions and five Regional Health Authority Board positions remain without a candidate.

The deadline to file nomination papers is April 9th at 2pm.

A complete list of candidates is available online and is updated as candidates file their nomination papers.
