The Saint John Human Development Council is getting $2.7 million in federal funding to help vulnerable youth looking for work.
The UYES! project will teach at-risk and homeless youth employability skills and provide them with work experience.
Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long told our newsroom it is probably one of the greatest announcements he has made in his three years as Member of Parliament.
“They work with Outflow if they want to get carpentry skills and other skills, they work with the Teen Resource Centre on counselling, they work with Saint John Learning Exchange if they looking for more education and career skills and with the Community Loan Fund with respect to social enterprise,” Long says.
Long said this will have a direct impact on poverty because one of the biggest challenges youth face is getting the practical training to get jobs.
Officials say about 185 youth will take part in the project and it is expected most will either find employment or return to school.
