New Professional Basketball Team For Saint John

Professional basketball is returning to Saint John for the first time in more than two years.

The Saint John Union has been named the second franchise in the newly-formed Eastern Canadian Basketball League.

League officials made the announcement in a social media post on Wednesday afternoon.

“We are honored to be a part of this amazing community and look forward to calling the TD Station our home for the upcoming inaugural season!” the team said in a tweet.

No other details, including when the upcoming season will take place, were immediately available.

The Truro Tide in Nova Scotia was announced as the league’s first official franchise in late September.

Saint John has been without a professional basketball team since the Riptide became dormant in 2019.

The team announced a one-year hiatus for the 2019-20 season to “re-group and examine alternatives that will strengthen their financial situation” but never returned.
