Thoughts from Parliament Hill on the ongoing fires in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
Wildfires are burning in Bocabec and Chamcook near Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, and in Tantallon/Hammonds Plains and Shelburne County, Nova Scotia.
Thousands of residents and businesses have been forced to leave the region.
Hundreds of homes in Nova Scotia and at least one home in New Brunswick have been destroyed by the flames.
New Brunswick Southwest MP John Williamson says 400 families have been evacuated in New Brunswick, as the fire grew over 400 percent in one day.
“My deepest gratitude goes out to the firefighters, volunteers and other first responders, working hard to get these fires under control in my riding and in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I do urge the federal government to offer any assistance to Maritime provinces, local emergency personnel and in my constituency to control and extinguish these fires,” Williamson says.
He adds water bombers resumed work yesterday but on-the-ground resources are needed.
As of noon today, the Stein Lake fire in New Brunswick was still deemed out of control, according to the provincial forest fire centre.
There are more than a dozen other active fires throughout the province, but none of those are out of control.
