Anglophone district education councils in the province have been given a bit of a reprieve, for now.
This is after Friday’s announcement from Education Minister Bill Hogan in the legislature that the new Education Act has been shelved.
The new Act would have seen anglophone district education councils lose their decision-making powers.
Anglophone East DEC member Kristin Cavoukian says she’d like to see more power given to the Councils instead, “We are the local community input and we are volunteers but we are committed to the children of New Brunswick and the education system of New Brunswick.”
The bill was set to be debated in the legislature this week.
“New Brunswickers have said loud and clear that what they want is more local input and more decentralization. We are calling on the government to give DECs more authority, not take our out authority away,” Cavoukian adds.
