Sunwing to operate under WestJet after acquisition, for at least five years

A popular airline that flies travelers to hot destinations will no longer operate on it’s own.

WestJet has acquired Sunwing, but as Transport Minister Omar Algabra told reporters, it does not mean Sunwing is shutting down.

“They are operating Sunwing under the WestJet air operations certificate, which will enable them to share resources. So, they can exchange aircraft if needed, increase capacity, so this will probably increase efficiency for the network,” Alghabra said.

Alghabra says part of the conditions of WestJet gaining ownership of Sunwing is to continue to operate it for five years and they are fulfilling those obligation.

He also said he is worried about the competition of airlines and increase of choices for Canadians in the air sector.
