The majority of Canadians would like to see cell phones not allowed in public schools, according to a survey by Narrative Research.
Those surveyed said the main reason is because they are too much of a distraction in a learning environment and getting rid of them would promote face-to-face communication, while reducing cheating and cyberbullying.
The poll said 80 per cent of Canadians are in favor of banning them, while only 15 per cent are opposed.
Support is highest in Quebec at 88 per cent and lowest in BC, but still at 74 per cent.
The survey said support for getting rid of cell phones in public schools, increases with age and for those with school-aged kids.
Among the few who support cell phones in schools say they promote personal responsibility and discipline, educational benefits and communication in emergencies.
