A reminder about the importance of civic numbers.
Millstream Fire Captain Scott Filmore says they’re a critical part of emergency services.
He says up to 90 per cent of homes have them, but they’re not properly placed.
“When we are responding to a call in the night, we are looking for these little blue dots at the end of your driveway, but we’ve seen them on telephone poles, on lawns, on the buildings set back too far, under trees, behind snowbanks. Having a civic number not only helps the fire department, but ambulance, police, and getting your packages from Amazon or wherever else you buy them from,” Fillmore says.
There is legislation stating that you need to have a civic number on your property. Fillmore says it’s quite easy to get one. They’re available at most fire departments.
“It should be readily or easily seen from the road from the main road. We recommend you put it out by the driveway, 10 to 12 feet back, two or four to five feet high or a little bit higher, and visible in both directions,” Fillmore adds.
