$70M to upgrade N.B. small craft harbours

Ottawa will spend $70 million over three years to upgrade small craft harbours in New Brunswick.

Federal officials were in Caissie Cape on Monday morning to announce the multi-year investment.

The money is part of more than $463 million over three years included in Budget 2024.

“Fishing is not just a way to earn a living – it’s a way of life for families and communities all along our coastline,” Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who is also the MP for Beauséjour, said in a news release.

“These improvements are vital to ensuring the long-term resiliency of our small craft harbours, particularly in the face of more frequent extreme weather events.”

Upgrades will take place at 18 small craft harbours throughout New Brunswick, according to federal officials.

More than $23.5 million will be used to reconstruct and repair piers, breakwaters and other critical harbour infrastructure at six harbours that sustained serious damage from hurricane Fiona in 2022.
