“We want to offer more support to those New Brunswickers who need it the most.”
That word from Liberal MLA John Ames while speaking to representatives from local nursing homes on the new governmernt policy for nursing home care.
Ames says in the interest of fairness, they will be asking those who can afford to pay a little more, to do so. “Right now, the cost of nursing home care is based solely on income. For our seniors, on the most part, this means annual pensions or income from things such as retirement income funds.” He says this will continue, but the formula will be changed to make it more fair.
Ames says the wealthy will pay more, but there is good news for those who financially need it. “Under the new income scale, couples with a household income of $60,000 or less will see their monthly contribution for care stemming from income to decrease. As an example, couples with a household income of $30,000 will see their monthly contribution for care decrease by $117 a month.”
Administration from Lincourt Manor in St. Stephen, the Passamaquoddy Lodge in St. Andrews, as well as from Campobello and McAdam were in attendance.
