A solemn ceremony and wreath laying held in King Square in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands, which cost over 7600 Canadians their lives.
Byron Thomas of Saint John organized the event and he tells us he was a sea cadet until becoming a sea cadet officer at around age 18 then a few years afterward he joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve. He says he served just shy of 44 years of military time.
Thomas says when he heard there was nothing going on to commemorate the anniversary he decided to take matters into his own hands and organize an event. He says Canada played a very important role in the liberation effort and that needs never to be forgotten.
Many people at the event wearing poppes in their shirts and coats. Several songs were sung including the National Anthem.
Victory in Europe Day, which marks the end of World War 2 in Europe, is this Friday.
