The Saint John Sea Dogs have drafted 15-year-old Joseph Veleno with their first overall draft choice.
Veleno was granted exceptional status by the QMJHL to enter the draft as an underage player.
He’s the first player from Quebec to be given exceptional status.
He joins Connor McDavid, Aaron Ekblad and John Tavares, all drafted into the Ontario Hockey League, as 15-year-olds granted exceptional status by Hockey Canada. His request was originally turned down because it was filed well after the deadline.
The six-foot 168 pound Veleno, a centre from Kirkland, Quebec, finished 12th in Quebec Midget AAA scoring this season with 52 points in 41 games. He also played for Quebec at the Canada Games.
In MLB
The Toronto Blue Jays will play at home against the Houston Astros, The Boston Red Sox host The Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees play against the LA Angels.
