New Brunswick Senator Challenges Auditor-General

New Brunswick Senator Joe Day of Hampton is taking exception to criticism of his expense claims by Auditor-General Micheal Ferguson.

Day says 90 per cent of the criticism is about expenses claimed from his work on the Board of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award which is a not for profit registered charity with the Governor General as the Honorary Patron.

Day says he was not paid a dime and he was working in his role as a parliamentarian, pointing out he was asked to join the Board precisely because he is a Senator.

Day says he’s going to arbitration before a judge to seek clarification, adding the Auditor-General in 2012 determined the Senate had 99 per cent compliance with the rules that were in place and didn’t recommend any changes.
