It’s an exciting time for athletes with a physical disability.
The Paralympics are underway in Rio with three new Brunswickers competing for a medal..
Executive Director for Ability New Brunswick Hayley Flaro says the determination and passion in a Paralympian is no different than that of an Olympian..
She says the Paralympics athletes worked and trained very hard, in the hopes of making it to the games in Rio, “There’s a lot of similarities between athletes with a disability and those without a disability. We get involved in sport and recreation growing up and it becomes a passion of ours. These athletes are incredibly talented and skilled and really excel in their sport. It’s amazing the level of competition and training that go into the Paralympics.”
“The paralympics started by a German Doctor who used the opportunity to rehabilitate World War 2 veteran who had some sort of injury or paralysis, and it has grown from there,” She adds.
Flaro says these athletes don’t let their disability stop them from succeeding.
Moncton’s Danielle Dorris competed today in Rio, in the 100m women’s swimming event. She placed 5th in her heat.
