Volunteers Needed To Help Children Improve Reading Skills

Studies show, children who reading below grade level at the end of grade 2 are likely to never read well.

The Elementary Literacy friends program is finding ways to change that.

They are looking for volunteers, who can commit to two hours a week for 10 weeks to help change a child’s future.

Executive Director Erin Schryer says it’s easy to get involved, “We recruit volunteers and we train volunteers and we match them to schools who have a need for volunteers. They commit to working with their child, using the curriculum that the program trains them in. They work with their child twice a week for 10 weeks, so it is a total of 20 hours of reading with the child that you are matched to.”

She says with this help, the children are seeing fantastic results, “We are seeing that children are mastering foundational literacy skills. They’re becoming more confident and motivated readers. These are key things that we need to see in the children to ensure that they become skilled readers.”
