Common Council Wants Taxi Bylaw Reviewed

Common Council voted unanimously in favour to ask the Taxi Advisory Committee to examine some issues involving the six month old taxi bylaw.

Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary put the motion forward because of what she claims are apparent flaws in the wording of the bylaw that has led to some cab drivers charging whatever they’d like.

She says the wording of the bylaw also doesn’t allow city police to enforce it either.

Councillor Ray Strowbridge says he won’t entertain the idea of taking the meters out of cabs, but he does support tweaking the wording of the bylaw.

Councillor Donna Reardon says Common Council has heard a lot of anecdotal evidence. She just wants a fair and transparent cab industry that’s based on some real data.

Mayor Don Darling says the Taxi Advisory Committee will give Council an update to see if there’s any gaps and, if so, they have recommendations to make it better.
