Assembly Of First Nations Wants Control Of Native Child Welfare

Canada’s treatment of First Nations children received international attention at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington.

According to a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, the federal government has not provided enough resources.

Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Kevin Hart says the First Nations need to take control of native child welfare because native children need to be at home learning about their culture, ceremonies and languages.

A Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling last January ordered the federal government to immediately overhaul the system and increase funding for First Nations childcare. The Tribunal found the lack of federal funding amounted to state sanctioned racial discrimination.
