A VIA Rail passenger train went off the rails this afternoon, giving passengers a shock, but luckily nothing else.
VIA Rail has confirmed the derailed train in an email.
It says Train 14 derailed at 12:35 this afternoon near Coal Branch while travelling from Montreal to Halifax. Two cars came off the tracks but remained upright.
All 94 passengers and 15 crew are uninjured. Local emergency crews are on the scene.
Beersville-Harcourt Fire Department Chief Mark Perry says they received the call around 1 PM.
The fire department, police, RCMP, and the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization all responded. RCMP confirms it is still on the scene helping passengers and guiding traffic.
VIA Rail will be finding alternative transportation for the passengers to their final destinations.
Train 14 and 15 were scheduled to depart Friday but are now cancelled. Passengers will be notified and offered alternative transportation, refunds, or a ticket exchange.
VIA Rail apologizes for the inconvenience. They are focusing their efforts on passenger safety and well-being.
As well, they are conducting an investigation into the derailment with CN Rail.
