Hands-on learning that helps students and the planet is the idea behind the New Brunswick charity, the Gaia Project.
Students at Forest Hills school are learning about electric vehicles through the project’s Electrify My Ride course.
Jane Burchill of the Gaia Project says grade 8 students get in an electric car, a Chevy Volt, and see what it’s all about.
“And then we have a Trash Tracker program in which we go through a full day of garbage and see how we can recycle better and compost better. We also have energy detectives where we monitor electricity around the school so we can make changes and use less electricity.” Burchill said in an interview.
“We also have Sustainability in Action for high school students. They pick a sustainability question and answer it by collecting data. They can do an audit of the sinks and find ways to waste less water.”

Canaport LNG is supporting the Gaia Project with a $10,000 donation.
Spokesperson Kate Shannon says they love this program because it really shows kids how small changes in their day to day routines can make a big difference.
