Rediscovering the “Rez”: A Hidden Gem in East Saint John

Tucked away off Loch Lomond Road in East Saint John, the “Rez” is one of our city’s most beautiful and underrated outdoor spaces. With scenic walking and biking trails, a refreshing swimming area, and a newly added volleyball court, playground, and dog park, it is a perfect destination for families, fitness enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike.

For many of us who grew up in Saint John, the Rez holds special memories. Back when we lived in Westmorland Heights and attended Woodlawn Elementary, biking out to the Rez was a regular adventure. We spent hours outside, exploring, playing, and connecting with friends. It was a way of life—active, social, and full of joy.

Today, we need to bring that spirit back. Our kids deserve the same opportunities to be active, to play on teams, and to enjoy the outdoors. Physical activity is not just about fitness—it is a powerful tool for mental health and healing. Team sports, in particular, teach cooperation, resilience, and support—skills that help combat trauma, which is one of the leading causes of addiction and mental illness.

Trauma can overwhelm the brain, but exercise and community support are proven ways to help manage and overcome it. That is why restoring and replacing the recreational facilities we have lost in Saint John is so important. These spaces are not just places to play—they are places to heal, grow, and thrive.

Let us encourage each other to get outside, move more, and reconnect with our community. Whether it is a walk at the Rez, a game of volleyball, or simply spending time with others, every step counts. And while we are at it, let us make healthier choices—cutting back on sugar and bread can make a substantial difference in how we feel.

Saint John has the potential to be a city where wellness, community, and nature go hand in hand. The Rez is a shining example of that vision. Let us protect it, promote it, and use it as inspiration to build a healthier, more connected future for everyone.
