Murals, Marigolds, and Memory: Telling Saint John’s Story Through Art

Saint John—Menaquesk, as the Wolastoqiyik call it—is a city rich in history, culture, and resilience. One of the most powerful ways we have been telling our story is through public art, especially murals. Over the past 28 years, more than 240 murals have been created across our city, each one a vibrant reflection of our community’s journey, struggles, and triumphs.

Murals are more than just decoration—they are storytelling tools. As the Wolastoqiyik say, “in the beginning,” our stories stretch back thousands of years. Storytelling has always been a traditional and proven way to learn, and when paired with visuals, it becomes even more impactful. Bright colours stimulate the brain, enhance memory, and create emotional connections. Murals help us learn not just facts, but feelings—about who we are, where we have come from, and where we are going.

These murals tell the human story of Saint John. They honour our heritage, celebrate our diversity, and reflect the challenges we have faced. They are painted on walls, fences, and buildings—turning everyday spaces into canvases of hope and pride. When we see our stories told in public spaces, it gives us a sense of belonging and purpose. It reminds us that we matter.

Nature also plays a role in shaping a healthy community. Studies show that having greenery and natural elements in urban spaces can reduce aggression and improve mental well-being. That is why the marigold gardens—45 and counting—planted throughout Saint John are so important. They add beauty, colour, and calm to our streets, just like the murals do.

Together, murals and marigolds are helping to transform Saint John into a city that reflects its people—creative, resilient, and proud. They are not just art; they are acts of care and community-building.

And let us not forget the incredible artists behind these works. Saint John is home to many talented creators who pour their hearts into these murals. Please support them—buy their art, share their work, and encourage others to do the same.

Love ❤️ Saint John, NB. Let us keep telling our story—one mural at a time.
