Here’s a great positive news story from the heart of Saint John’s Old North End. On a recent Friday evening, while volunteers were out cleaning and painting, something special was happening at the corner of Bridge Street and Main Street. Families and children were out enjoying the newly refurbished Robertson Square, a space that has been beautifully brought back to life thanks to the City of Saint John and the dedication of local volunteers.
The transformation of Robertson Square is a shining example of what community care can achieve. The city has invested in a new playground and deck, creating a safe and welcoming space for families to gather. Local artist Doug Simpson added a thoughtful touch by designing a peaceful seating area where people can relax and take in the beauty of our river system. And thanks to the team at Marigolds and Murals, a fresh mural now brightens the area, adding colour and storytelling to the square.
This part of the city is steeped in history. Once home to 15,000 more residents, the Old North End was a vibrant hub of life and culture. Today, it’s rebounding—and Robertson Square is a symbol of that resurgence. Most of the land from the viaduct to Bridge Street has now been purchased, paving the way for future development and revitalization.
There’s hope that the riverboat tours from the Saint John Marina and the trolleys from the cruise ships will return, bringing even more life and energy to the area. These attractions would not only boost tourism but also reconnect residents and visitors with the natural beauty and rich heritage of Saint John.
Thanks to the City of Saint John and all the volunteers who continue to believe in this community. To truly keep the momentum going, we must also invest in post-secondary education, affordable housing, and mental and physical health supports. Pride in our city grows when we care for it—and each other.
Love ❤️ Saint John, NB. Let’s keep building a city we’re proud to call home.
