A resident doctor from Quebec recently cycled across Canada, to raise awareness about autism.
Dr. Catherine Glorieux was diagnosed two years ago at the age of 37.
She began her ride in British Columbia in July and arrived in Halifax this week.
Along the way, she spoke to a lot of people about her diagnosis, “Sometimes a person asked question who has a child with Autism, or is a teacher who was working with kids with Autism. Some people don’t even know what it is. It has been a great way to share information and try to be an inspiration to those on the spectrum.”
Dr. Glorieux began noticing symptoms when she was going through residency, “It was a very stressful time for me. Little details started to appear here and there and I was getting help from a doctors helpline in Qubec and they suggested I should be evaluated, which led to me being diagnosed.”
She also mentioned the show, “The Good Doctor”, a show about a Physician with Autism.
She says everyone on the spectrum is very different, but she feels she can definitely relate.
“Personally, even if I have a diagnosis, Autism does not define me as a person. It is just a condition I have, and I am learning to live with it. It has great strengths that also come with it,” Dr. Glorieux says.
