Saint John residents will have the chance to learn more about upcoming renovations at Dominion Park.
A community meeting is being held Thursday night at the Dennis Morris Community Centre on Green Head Road.
Tim O’Reilly, the deputy commissioner of parks and recreation, said council had committed capital funds over the past couple of years for the work.
But O’Reilly said spring flooding both years prevented them from making some of the improvements.
“We wanted to incorporate some changes to the design before we got back in front of the community to discuss what the options are to make improvements to the park,” said O’Reilly in a phone interview.
The city wants to have a lot of community input on the final outcomes of what the park is going to look like, said O’Reilly.
He said there are a couple of big projects they are looking at for the park.
“The canteen facilities that are there that also have washrooms and change rooms, we’re looking to make improvements to that facility,” said O’Reilly. “Another big project we have funding for is a new playground for the site.”
O’Reilly said they will be incorporating design elements so damage will be mitigated in the future as a result of flooding.
“We definitely have to recognize that that is a likely occurrence going into the future, so we do want to make sure that we do plan that part,” he said.
Thursday’s meeting takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
O’Reilly said the next step will be design work and hopefully starting the improvements in the new year.
