Fatal Saint John Fire Deemed Accidental

Officials say a fatal fire in west Saint John has been deemed accidental.

Fire crews were called to 19 Loyalist Lane shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Platoon Chief Barry Oickle said they were told there could be someone in the basement area.

“As crews entered the structure, they encountered heavy smoke and high heat conditions going down to the basement area,” said Oickle.

The victim was found in the basement area and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, he said.

One other person who was also in the home managed to escape with minor injuries.

Oickle said the incident remains under investigation.
