Military Ends Blizzard Response In Newfoundland

The Canadian Armed Forces have wrapped up their operations in Newfoundland and Labrador after this month’s unprecedented blizzard.

Hundreds of troops were deployed to the province to help out after the historic storm on Jan. 17.

More than 90 centimetres of snow fell in some areas, with wind gusts exceeding 150 kilometres per hour.

Reservists and soldiers accomplished 900 tasks for people in and around the St. John’s region.

In a statement, Premier Dwight Ball said the amount of progress to date with regards to cleanup would not have been possible without their efforts.

“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will never forget the selflessness, dedication, and the comfort they brought to many of our most vulnerable residents at such a stressful time,” said Ball.

Many of the troops came from Base Gagetown in New Brunswick.
