Residents Evacuated Due To ‘Flammable Substance’

An unusual incident prompted an overnight evacuation of a building in St. Stephen early Saturday.

Shortly after 4 a.m., more than a dozen tenants were asked to leave their apartment on Schoodic street.

The RCMP said a man entered the building and allegedly poured what was believed to have been a flammable liquid was poured in the hallway of the building, then threatened to light it on fire.

They said all residents were evacuated as a precaution and no one was hurt.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene. He is being held in custody pending a court appearance.

The Canadian Red Cross has arranged lodging and meals for 14 people, including three children.

Officials say it could take several days of clean-up and ventilation before they are allowed to return home.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the St. Stephen RCMP.
