Green Party Launches Leadership Race

The Green Party of Canada has officially launched its leadership race.

Party officials unveiled details of the eight-month contest on Monday.

Interested candidates have until June 3 to submit their applications.

They will have to submit an initial entry fee of $10,000, followed by another $40,000 before the end of July.

“We believe setting the initial entry fee to $10,000 makes the contest accessible to a broad range of contestants from across the country,” said interim leader Jo-Ann Roberts in a statement. “Contestants have six months to build their profile and raise funds before the second stage fee is due.”

Online voting will take place between Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, with the new leader being announced at a convention.

“We have structured this contest to cast a big net. We hope to capture the imagination of a wide and diverse set of contestants, new members, and supporters,” said Roberts.

Elizabeth May stepped down in November after 13 years as party leader.

She continues to serve as parliamentary leader in the House of Commons.
