Parts of southern New Brunswick could see an extended period of freezing rain to end the week.
Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning early Thursday for Saint John and County.
The warning was extended later in the day to include places like the Kennebecasis Valley, Sussex, Charlotte County, and Moncton.
“Ice build-up due to freezing rain is expected or occurring,” said the warning.
Precipitation began as snow Thursday morning and is expected to change to ice pellets to freezing rain in the evening.
The freezing rain is forecast to continue throughout the day Friday before switching back to snow Friday night.
Forecasters at the national weather agency said between 10 and 20 millimetres of freezing rain is expected.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous.”
Areas like the Kennebecasis Valley and Sussex are expected to see more ice pellets than freezing rain.
Inland areas of southern New Brunswick are expected to see five to 10 centimetres of snow Friday night.
Meanwhile, the precipitation is expected to remain as snow in central and northern New Brunswick, where up to 40 centimetres is possible in some areas.
