Those who spend their summers on Kennebecasis Island will no longer have the on-demand ferry service they have been used to.
Starting Friday, the Peninsula Princess ferry, which runs between Millidgeville and Summerville, will also provide service to the island.
Over the past three years, the province has hired a private company to provide on-demand service to Kennebecasis Island 12 to 16 hours a day.
But Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Oliver said the on-demand service came at a “significant cost to taxpayers.”
“The province cannot continue this annual expense and must look for more economical solutions and maximize our current resources,” said Oliver in a release Wednesday.
The new schedule will see four round-trip crossings to Kennebecasis Island on Saturdays and Sundays and six round-trip crossings each weekday. The exception is the 5:45 a.m. and 10 p.m. departures from Kennebecasis Island, which will not be offered until at least June 1.
Ferry service to Kennebecasis Island operates from the Victoria Day weekend in May to the Remembrance Day weekend in November.
