Construction Starts On Squire Drive Roundabout

Work begins Monday on the new $1-million Squire Drive roundabout in Quispamsis.

The roundabout will be installed at the intersection of Squire Drive and the Gondola Point Arterial.

Because of the work, there will be no access to the arterial via Alma Lane or Squire Drive until Labour Day.

Drivers are asked to use alternate routes, such as Pettingill Road and Chamberlain Road.

“This has been a priority for council,” said Mayor Gary Clark in a statement. “We know this work will result in extra traffic in the detour areas. I urge residents to be cautious, courteous and patient.”

Traffic along the arterial will continue to flow, but drivers are being told to expect delays due to the construction.

During last November’s announcement, the town’s director of engineering and works said 40,000 people travel in the area every day.

“When you break that down, in the side streets you would have anywhere from 10,000 to 12,000,” said Gary Losier. “The [Gondola Point] ferry does generate the bulk of the traffic in the north/south direction on the arterial.”

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will contribute $650,000 toward the work with the town paying the remaining 35 per cent.
