The New Brunswick government is “strongly considering” easing border restrictions with some Quebec communities.
On Friday, the province said it is looking at twinning with Avignon Regional County Municipality and Temiscouata Regional County Municipality.
It means residents from these regions bordering Madawaska and Restigouche counties may be able to travel here without having to self-isolate within days.
“There is such a sense of community between the Campbellton region and our neighbours across the Restigouche River, and between Temiscouata and Edmundston,” said Premier Blaine Higgs in a statement.
“We are exploring whether it is feasible to ease our border restrictions to reunite these communities, while still keeping New Brunswick residents safe.”
The Department of Health is working to determine the best way to move forward and will present recommendations to the all-party COVID-19 cabinet committee and cabinet next week.
According to the province, the department will consider data such as the number of positive cases in the regional municipalities, public health advice, border control measures and epidemiological information.
