Two Animals Seized In Ongoing Investigation

Officials say two animals have been seized as part of an alleged animal cruelty investigation in Saint John.

The New Brunswick SPCA and Saint John police opened an investigation Sunday after videos began circulating on Facebook.

In a statement posted to Facebook on Monday, the SPCA said the videos appear to show a youth abusing a dog and a small animal.

One of the videos, which was viewed by our newsroom, appeared to show someone hitting and kicking a dog.

Jim Hennessy, a spokesperson for the Saint John Police Force, confirmed a dog and a hamster were seized from a home Monday as part of the ongoing investigation.

The SPCA said both animals were surrendered to animal protection officers by the family.

“The Saint John Police Force and the NBSPCA are unable to provide further comment regarding charges due to this being an open investigation,” said the SPCA in its statement.

It also asked the public to refrain from calling their toll-free hotline or police as repeated calls tie up valuable time and resources.
