The People’s Alliance of New Brunswick is promising more help for low-income families struggling to keep up with home energy costs.
Leader Kris Austin says he would increase the Home Energy Assistance Program benefit to $250 from the current $100.
“Nobody should have to make the choice between heating their home and putting food on the table. Sadly, this is a reality for some people in New Brunswick,” said Austin in a news release Wednesday.
Austin said more than doubling the benefit will allow these families to keep more money in their pockets for other necessities, like groceries.
Under the benefit program, full-time New Brunswick residents who live in a house or an apartment and make less than $30,000 a year are eligible to apply.
Austin said his party would also evaluate the taxes paid by low-income earners and seniors on home heating oil, natural gas and NB Power bills.
