A reminder from the Moncton Fire Department about decoration safety during the holiday season.
Fire Prevention Officer Steve Richardson says, “When you decide where to put your tree, ensure it isn’t near an electric baseboard heater, wood stove, propane fireplace and other sources of heat that could dry the tree out. If it falls over, there’s the potential it could set it on fire.”
You should also keep a close eye on your pets when they’re around your tree, because they could knock the tree over, “Be very careful in your home, where you tree is and what potential ignition sources are nearby. The potential of a fire is slim, but we want to eliminate as much risk as we possibly can.”
He says the decorations on your tree should also be closely examined, “Regardless of whether it is natural or artificial, check the lights strings, check the cords, Make sure they are not frayed, check the sockets, check the bulbs, make sure they are in good condition. If there is any sign of damage, get rid of them, you don’t want to risk the chance of a spark.”
