A humpback whale has been saved by the Campobello Whale Rescue Team (CWRT) after being found badly entangled in the Bay of Fundy.
The Canadian Whale Institute says the whale was first reported by a fisherman Sunday afternoon, but it was too late in the day for their team to respond.
A Fisheries and Oceans Canada aerial surveillance plane relocated the whale Monday morning and the team set out, according to a Facebook post from the institute.
“The CWRT set out from Campobello Island in the fog and travelled 35 nautical miles over bumpy seas to the location,” said the post.
The institute said the whale had “multiple wraps of rope around the head and body and the tail” that was weighing it down.
It took the team several hours and many cuts with specialized knives and a cutting grapple to free the mammal.
