Youth Council Hosts Evening About Mental Health

New Brunswick’s Education Minister joined members of the Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe Youth Council to talk mental health on Wednesday night.

Dominic Cardy says mental health is the second most important thing, behind physical safety, “The best thing for mental health for everyone is to be in contact with other human beings. If you are a student, being in school, and in a school system that thanks to our teachers and support staff have been proven to be pretty safe since last September.”

Cardy says it is important that students continue to learn, because it helps support their mental health, “I think the mental health impacts of COVID-19 are, unfortunately they are going to be with us after the disease is gone. So for me, making sure that our schools stay open and students can keep on learning as much as possible and as safe as possible, that will help support the mental health of our students as well.”

Questions were submitted in advance prior to the live virtual event that explored how the pandemic has affected youth and their mental health..

Cardy says, “It is up to the folks like us to go out and absolute make sure supports are there. We have to do more to enhance them. They needed to be enhanced before COVID and now we really know they need to be there and stronger.”
