A federal fund dedicated to improving transit services in rural and remote parts of Canada has been announced.
Infrastructure and Communities Minister Catherine McKenna said $250 million will be made available over the next five years.
“This is in addition to existing funding that’s supporting transit projects in smaller communities like bus service in Selkirk, Manitoba, to a handi-van in Fort Frances,” McKenna said.
The fund is the first-of-its-kind dedicated to the transit needs of the country’s smaller communities.
McKenna said it recognizes the challenges of those communities in accessing funding.
“We’ve heard loud and clear from rural, remote and small communities that they need specific funding to support their unique transportation needs,” she said.
