The Deputy Prime Minister says the federal government will work with each of the provinces, as a part of their $30 billion national child care strategy.
Chrystia Freeland says each bilateral negotiation and relationship is going to be different, “We understand that this is work being done directly by the provinces and territories and I think it is going to be important for us to listen and to hear from them where they see the needs. We’re sincere about really wanting to roll up our sleeves and work together and understand province by province, territory by territory what is needed.”
Freeland says the funding will be over five years. The Trudeau government believes it will help with economic growth.
“This is social infrastructure that will drive jobs and growth,” Freeland says, “Early learning and childcare is a national economic policy we need now.”
New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs says this plan is a great election ploy by the federal government.
He feels discussions with each of the provinces should have happened before the budget was released.
