For the first time, women will lead the city councils in southern New Brunswick’s three main cities at the same time.
Incumbent mayor Dawn Arnold has been elected in Moncton with more than 58 per cent of the vote. Erik Gingles finished in second place.
Prior to the election, Arnold’s platform referenced many large economical achievements Moncton had reached over her time as mayor.
“We want to keep that momentum going and keep growing while at the same time looking out for the most vulnerable in our community,” said Arnold.
In Saint John, councillor Donna Reardon has been elected with 10,089 votes, a more than 4,000-vote lead on Mel Vincent.
Vincent’s campaign announced it had phoned Reardon to concede after the results were announced.
“I’ve done a lot of work, a lot of hard work, so it’s a great feeling,” Reardon said.
In Fredericton, Kate Rogers beat incumbent mayor Mike O’Brien by more than 4,000 votes — 9,056 to 5,045.
