No Damage After Fire At Lake Utopia Mill

Fire crews spent several hours Thursday battling a blaze in a pile of wood chips at the Lake Utopia Mill.

St. George fire Chief Sean Morton said crews were called to the scene around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Morton said they also requested help from four nearby departments: Eastern Charlotte, Saint Andrews, St. Stephen, and Bonny River.

The fire was brought under control shortly after midnight Thursday night, he said, adding his department was on scene until around 3 a.m. Friday.

A spokesperson with J.D. Irving, Limited said the fire was contained to the pile of wood chips.

Anne McInerney, vice-president of communications, said no one was hurt and there was no damage to the mill.

“We’re appreciative of the speedy response from nearby fire crews and the Department of Natural Resources,” McInerney said in a statement.

McInerney said water bombers from JDI and DNR were also on the scene to help battle the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said Morton.
