More than a dozen recounts are underway across New Brunswick following last week’s municipal election.
Paul Harpelle, a spokesperson with Elections New Brunswick, said Wednesday that around 15 recounts have been requested to date.
Non-elected candidates can request a recount if there is a difference of 25 votes or less between a candidate declared elected and a candidate who was not elected.
In Saint John, Ward 4 candidate Gina Hooley requested a recount after finishing eight votes behind councillor-elect Paula Radwan and 21 votes behind Greg Stewart.
Harpelle said the recount for Ward 4 began on Tuesday and is continuing on Wednesday. He noted that all ballots are counted individually before being placed through the tabulation machine.
A recount is expected to begin Tuesday night in Norton after a request by council candidate Jessica Freeze Snyder, who received one fewer vote than councillor-elect Jeff Gaunce.
Meanwhile, a recount in St. George concluded with no change to the results. Gil Breau made the request after finishing two votes behind councillor-elect Nancy Coulton.
Harpelle said candidates have until Friday to request a recount.
