A Hampton business is leading a new project to help strengthen the local food supply chain.
Kredl’s Corner Market will receive $134,000 from the provincial government toward the initiative.
The idea is to work with local farmers to build their network of buyers and connect the buyers to growers.
The hope is to build stronger supply chains so locally grown produce can be sold provincewide on a larger scale and year-round.
“We are excited to play a role in connecting growers and producers in the province with customers,” co-owner Blair Hyslop said in a news release.
According to the province, the initial focus of the project will be on southern New Brunswick.
Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Margaret Johnson said this kind of co-ordination will help with the government’s efforts to strengthen the food system and improve food self-sufficiency.
“This is an exciting opportunity to bring together the farmers who grow our food with the folks who can help get it on the tables of New Brunswickers,” Johnson said in the release.
Funding for the initiatve is part of a $1.5-million increase in the department’s 2021-22 budget to help improve food self-sufficiency.
