High winds have ripped off part of the roof at a high school in northwestern New Brunswick.
It happened at Carleton North High School in Florenceville-Bristol as thunderstorms moved through the region Wednesday evening.
“Debris from the event was scattered across the teacher parking lot, the lawns and into the tree line adjacent to school property,” Jennifer Read, a spokesperson for the Anglophone West School District, said in an email.
Read said there is substantial damage to the roof over the skilled trades and arts departments of the school.
There is also water damage in the hallway and adjacent classrooms in that wing of the school, she said.
“As a result of this event occurring after normal operational hours, no school staff were in harm’s path,” Read wrote in an email.
Read said the extent of the damage is under assessment, adding that a report will be written and shared with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
In the meantime, district facilities staff are working to ensure that further damage to the school is reduced.
“We are confident that the school will be repaired in a timeline for resumption of school in the fall,” said Read.
