Quebec Agency To Investigate Campbellton Incident

An independent review agency has been named to investigate an incident in Campbellton involving a police officer.

Six investigators from Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes will be in Campbellton on Sunday looking into the assault allegations at the request of New Brunswick authorities.

The BEI says preliminary information suggests Campbellton RCMP received a call on July 2, about a man who had reportedly entered at least one business, possibly armed with a stick.

During the police intervention, it’s believed at least one officer used force.

It adds the 30-year-old man reportedly refused medical treatment and was taken into custody.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is being asked to contact the BEI.

A graphic video of the incident has been widely circulated on social media, showing an officer who appears to be holding a man down and striking him.

In incidents involving police officers, it is standard to request an independent review to help determine whether charges should be laid.
